CHICHESTER CATHEDRAL

A trip to Chichester is not complete without a visit to the historic 900 year old Chichester Cathedral, whose spire dominates the horizon for miles around. This magnificent Cathedral is Mother Church to the parishes of Sussex and welcomes visitors of any faith and those with none. With history, heritage, art and music – and the beautiful Bishop’s Palace Gardens to explore – it’s a must-see for visitors of all ages.

It is free to enter Chichester Cathedral and it is open every day all year round. Free guided tours run at 11.15am and 2.30pm from Monday to Saturday – tours last about an hour and there’s no need to book. There are a number of special trails for children to help them learn and have fun while exploring this wonderful building.

Chichester Cathedral is a fascinating combination of both ancient and modern, where original medieval features sit alongside world famous contemporary artworks. It is renowned for its art, which includes paintings, tapestries, sculptures and stained glass. Contemporary works by acclaimed artists such as John Piper, Graham Sutherland, Marc Chagall and Philip Jackson, complement paintings and carvings from every century since the Cathedral’s foundation.

The Cloisters Café offers delicious homemade food from breakfast to afternoon tea, light snacks and indulgent lunches, as well as a tasty selection of affordable children’s meals. In the Shop there’s an opportunity to buy distinctive Cathedral souvenirs, unique jewellery created by local designers, Fairtrade gifts, traditional toys and sacred music. There is also a wide selection of books ranging from local interest titles to spirituality.

Chichester Ship Canal Heritage Centre

Welcome to Chichester Canal

Just steps away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, Chichester Canal offers a unique and peaceful environment. Linking the City to the sea, with diverse resident wildlife, we’re lucky to have this stunning haven on our doorstep. Year round there is always something to do at the Canal; pop into the Cafe, take a stroll along the towpath or hire a rowing boat. But Chichester Canal’s speciality is boat trips, getting you close to nature as you travel from the Canal Basin into the countryside.

Running from February until November, the Canal has up to four daily boat trips on our trip boat, Kingfisher. For a more special occasion the Cruise and Dine package on Richmond is a fantastic experience. These trips are rather different, with a meal and a drink as part of the deal. As well as the ever-popular Fish and Chip cruise, this year we are also offering a quintessentially English Afternoon Tea cruise.

Today Chichester Canal is an exciting visitor attraction, but this hasn't always been the case...
Originally part of the Portsmouth and Arundel Canal it was initially a success, but sadly most of the canal fell into disrepair by the 1840’s, with just a short stretch in use until 1906. Restoration started in the 1970’s and it’s now possible to navigate to near Crosbie Bridge. It is still possible to see the original canal features, e.g. the Poyntz Bridge near the Canal Basin or you can stop at Hunston Bridge and enjoy the view that Turner painted in 1828.

Steeped as it is in history, the Canal is now accessible to all and offers a wide range of ways to explore the waterway. There is no doubt Chichester Canal has something to appeal to everyone.

Chichester Canal Cafe is open every day from 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. except for January and February, when the Cafe closes at 4 p.m.

CLOSED 25 December to 10 January

Prices vary, please see Chichester Canal website for more details.

Waterside Cafe with indoor and outdoor seating, offering a wide selection of hot and cold drinks, mouth watering cakes and light lunches.

Toilets.

Limited free parking with 2 disabled parking bays

Fully accessible toilets and baby changing facilities

Upstairs seating and toilet can be accessed by a lift. There are also ground floor public toilets adjacent to the cafe.

The boats are fully accessible via lifts.

Chichester Canal lies on the south side of the city just a few minutes walk from both the bus and train stations. By bus, walk south from the bus station and turn left into Basin Road, the Canal Basin and cafe are to your right. By train, walk south from the train station, cross the road and turn left into Basin Road, the Canal Basin and cafe are to your right. By car, use the postcode PO19 8DT
