December has arrived and you’ve probably already started your Christmas Shopping and festive preparations, but have you decided what you’ll be tucking into for that all-important Christmas dinner?
If you're the one adorning the chef's hat, you'll want to find something truly special to serve up for the main event; after all it is everyone's favourite dinner of the year! Will it be a traditional turkey with all the trimmings or perhaps something more on trend this year – duck with cherry stuffing? We’ve spoken to the experts at Adsdean Farm Shop, proud winners of the Sussex Food & Drink Awards and featured in the BBC’s ‘Great British Menu’ alongside ‘The Hairy Bikers’, to find out exactly what you’ll need to make your Christmas dinner a hit with the whole family this year.
I'm thinking traditional turkey this year - what size bird do I need?
We're often asked what size Turkey do I need? We suggest 1lb per person, so for 8 people on Christmas day that’s an 8lb turkey, plus some leftovers for Boxing Day. If you’re like us and wish to freeze extra for New Year or January, then maybe a 12-14lb bird is better. We sell free-range Bronze and barn-reared turkeys (all dry plucked, game hung for 10 days and individually boxed), plus local Walderton geese, ducks and free-range chicken. Some people worry that they haven't ordered a big enough bird, but remember you can always add chipolatas, bacon rolls and sausagemeat to the table, all of which we have for sale at our butchers counter alongside our birds.
I’m thinking something other than turkey this year, what else would you suggest?
If turkey isn't for you this year then we have plenty of other meats to choose from. Alongside our other birds, Walderton geese, and ducks, we have our own hand-reared free-range pigs. Our butcher’s ham is cured, smoked and cooked to perfection. If you are feeding a large family, why not have a whole gammon on the bone? It not only tastes amazing, but makes a wonderful centrepiece for your table too. Boiling up the bones afterwards also makes a delicious soup to enjoy after chilly winter walks during the festive period.
When is your last ordering date?
Christmas orders should be with us by the 17th of December. Although we take orders almost right up to Christmas, the sooner you order, the quicker you can relax knowing that’s one more thing ticked off the list. Our friendly butchers are also always on hand with top tips and suggestions if you need a little help choosing the right meat for your perfect Christmas meal.
Christmas is a busy time of year, can I order online?
Absolutely! We love to have our customers come in to see us at the Farm Shop, but we also take orders over the phone: 01243 575212 and via our online form. We can also organise home deliveries for orders over £100 within a 5-mile radius, so ordering your Christmas meats from us is completely hassle free!
