There are plenty of peaceful green spaces for a casual stroll, an escape
from the bustle of the shopping streets or for a picnic. Priory Park and the Recreation Ground provide
open areas for sports such as football, cricket and bowls, and also children's playgrounds.
'Neptune', a sculpture of an old seated man, when new, was in South
Street. A hundred years ago it was brought to Priory Park.
Beyond the bowling green and children's playground is the 13th
century choir building of the Greyfriars, now a museum.
Over the wall is Jubilee Park, with magnificient trees, planted for the
Golden Jubilee celebrations of Queen Victoria, 1887.
Walking outside of the Walls in Jubilee Park gives a true
picture of their height and scale.
