RREC Central Southern Section

23 October 2011

The Cancerwise Soapbox Derby took place in sunshine at the Goodwood Motor Circuit. Teams were entered from local groups and others from further afield, and the audience was treated to thrills, spills and laughs.

Although a non-official RREC Central Southern Section event, nine club cars and their occupants gave up their Sunday to add support to this charity event. Our club cars, plus an additional visitor in a Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, put on an impressive display of Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars, from Ian Niblett's 1926 20hp to David Steel's 'new Goodwood Ghost' and including Roger Felton's 1931 heavy crank green WO Bentley. Many interested spectators approached our members and there was many a discussion over all the different models.

The winners of the event were: 8th Newport Scouts from the Isle of Wight, and runners up: KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) 47 Regiment RA, Thorney Island.

Cub Scouts from Chichester and Bognor Regis ran the very energetic Cub Scout Box Kart Challenge alongside the main soapbox event.

Chairman of CancerWise Dave Mallan says "Money is still coming in but we are hoping that the day will raise around £5,000.00. CancerWise are very grateful to everyone who came to enjoy the day and support the Charity."
