|We had been promised the opportunity to park on the 'meadow' overlooking the South Downs subject only to the area not being waterlogged. As it turned out, apparently 11mm of water over the preceding Friday and Saturday was sufficient to render the meadow unusable, even on chalk down land. As a consequence we were invited to park in front of Uppark House which in reality proved a tad fraught. However the day remained fairly dry but windy and with glimpses of the sun most of us had our picnic in the lee of the stately home on the East Lawn. The Senior Gardener Andy Lewis who was the duty manager for the day, and somewhat brusque, had arranged for a volunteer gardener, David Edyvean, to give us a tour of the gardens which are being restored and most interesting, although very little of the original Repton and Capability Brown designs survive.
