OLD BARN NURSERIES, DIAL POST, HORSHAM
Sunday 25 October 2009

Sixty-one members in twenty-seven Club motor cars were booked in to this event, suggested by ex Section member Rod Goodall. Rod left our Section when he moved to the West Country some years ago but contacted me in September last year after he had moved back to Ashington and started work for Old Barn. He was familiar with our events and therefore promoted this event as being 'one for the ladies'.

Our motor cars were greeted by Ralph Taylor and then displayed either side of the walk-in to the main entrance and they attracted quite a lot of interest from the general public. Rod and his wife Annie had worked hard in the previous days turning the Furniture Marquee into an exclusive coffee reception and lunch dining area just for our members.

Several additional attractions where planed (unfortunately the Belly Dancer let us down!) including a brass quintet playing during the day, Orchids for every lady and a 10% discount on all purchases made from Old Barn on the day of our visit.

Old Barn generously donated three 'hampers' of Christmas decorations valued at £100.00, £50.00 and £25.00 and so our intrepid raffle ticket seller went to work. Once again Jean Taylor did an excellent job and members bought tickets with the net result that we were able to send a cheque for £310.00 to the Chestnut Tree Hospice for Children.

After coffee members explored the very extensive sales floor (not just a garden centre, you could purchase almost anything there from fresh food to a garden cabin). Nicely laid-up lunch tables for six or eight members had been set up and fifty-seven of us sat down for a splendid three course meal cooked and served by the in-house Old Barn catering staff. Sixty years ago, to this day, Mr & Mrs Thatcher were blessed with a beautiful bouncing boy - so we all sang Happy Birthday to Ray!

Our thanks go to the Old Barn management and all the staff involved, especially Rod and Annie, for looking after us so well and all their efforts in making it a very enjoyable day.
