RREC Central Southern Section
Past Events

Sunday 12 July 2009

Notwithstanding the gloomy weather forecast, a mostly warm and sunny if breezy day greeted eighteen Club cars and members for a return visit to display our motor cars on the lawns of West Dean College near Chichester, adjacent to the delightful West Dean Gardens. Although not open to the public the flint clad college made a magnificent backdrop for the ubiquitous Central Southern Summer Picnic event with a 'hampers and champers' theme.

We were pleased to welcome new members Mr & Mrs John Mitchell who initially arrived without their Club car as it was apparently in the process of being 'recommissioned' but, on seeing our assembly, hurried home to Pulborough to return in the attractive looking bright green T2 that they had acquired earlier this year.

Other notable cars in attendance, regrettably not often seen at our Section events, included Mike Coombes's huge but elegant pre-war Wraith and Sue Norwood's splendid, but even larger, 40/50 (Silver Ghost).

Members enjoyed strolling around the charming walled gardens with their colourful displays of flowers and plants and exploring the mysteries of various large greenhouses. An added delight was the impressive pergola in the grounds of the college awash with clematis and other climbers adorning the structure. For the more energetic, a two mile walk around the panoramic expanse of the arboretum offered the opportunity for spectacular views from an elevated position on the hillside back to the college and the countryside beyond.

Our thanks are due to Simon Ward of the Edward James Foundation who administers the estate for their hospitality.
