| It was the first really cold Sunday morning of the new year when some
forty-five members of our Section of the Club met for lunch. We had been to this venue on previous
occasions because, besides meeting over lunch, we can play skittles in a dedicated room for that
purpose. I had asked David Steel if he would organise the skittle competition and, as always, he
carried out the task efficiently as would any retired Civil Servant. He appointed four team leaders
who picked their players. Each had two throws using the three balls at each go. The scores were added
up for each team and the members of the winning team received a pen (left over from the last Section
rally in Germany!).
Rodney Marples won the best individual score - he subsequently told me he spent much of his time, many
years ago, while at university, playing bowls. The food was excellent and no one complained - not
to me, anyway.
