| On Sunday 14 October the 2007 National Finals of the Greenpower Electric Car Races for Schools were held at the Goodwood Motor Circuit, three miles from Chichester. The Greenpower Formula 35 was a 1.5-hour race for cars built by sixth forms and colleges. The Greenpower Formula 24, a four-hour race, was the main event. The seventy-five participating cars were built by school teams of up to twelve pupils aged 11-16. This annual event again attracted large crowds of spectators from all over Britain. The very first Greenpower electric car race took place at Goodwood on 15 October 1999 when twenty-one cars entered.
Over one thousand pupils have designed and built their own cars using identical free-issue 24-volt motors and 12-volt batteries supplied by Greenpower. The cars are made from a variety of materials from wood to aluminium. All teams consisted of six drivers and six pit-crew.
The winner of both the Formula 35/Streamliner and Formula 24 was Seaford College's 'The Phoenix'. The mileage was 129.6 miles in the Formula 24 race, with a fastest lap of the race of 4 minutes 2.8 seconds. |
